It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Willie Lee Hurt of Morehead, KY on March 22, 2026, due to complications from a stroke at the age of 89. He also fought a courageous battle against dementia during his last bit of time here on earth. His wife Patricia was at his bedside holding his hand as he passed. Born in Campton, KY on April 9, 1936, to the late Charlie Hurt Sr. and Lena Cline Hurt, he was 1 of 14 children.
Willie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia A. Hurt; two daughters: Patricia (Michel) Walden of Mt. Sterling and Julia (Jason) Bowman of Morehead; five grandchildren: Megan Walden, Victoria Walden, Drake Bowman, Corbin (Airika) Bowman, Sophia Bowman; and two great grandchildren: Lydia and Evelyn Bowman.
Also surviving are his brothers: Sherman Hurt and Bob Hurt both of Campton, Bill Hurt of West Carrollton, OH, Charlie Hurt Jr. of North Carolina. and Darlie Hurt of Jackson, KY.
Willie worked numerous jobs throughout the years and retired from MSU where he was a custodian at Alumni Tower.
Known for his playful attitude, shenanigans, making people laugh and being a kid at heart, Willie’s love for bluegrass and playing the guitar made him many friends from many places through the years. He taught himself how to play by sneaking his brother’s guitar, hiding under the porch and learning to play by ear. He was also known for clogging and never missed a chance to cut a rug. He loved to tell stories of growing up and of when he was younger, some you’d think were a tall tale until his siblings would join in and recount the crazy adventures they had.
Willie loved being outdoors—no matter the weather—with his beloved doggies by his side.
To have known him was to remember him. Everywhere he went, someone would say “Hey Willie!” He was happy, strong-willed, caring, loving and a very proud father and Pap. He loved his family more than anything. He loved going on outings with his daughter Julie, where they would usually end up at China Star, his favorite place to eat. He was always up for an adventure whether it be riding roller coasters in his 70’s or riding in a side-by-side up a mountain at our last Hurt Reunion.
He was such a special man and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Charlie Hurt Sr. and Lena Cline Hurt; five brothers: Herman, Clarence, Wendall, Reed and Arlie Hurt; three sisters: Lovelle “Tootsie” King, Eunice “Own” Wilhoit, and Anna Ruth Clark; and one precious grandson Hunter.
No services will be held at this time.
At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations to Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351 would be greatly appreciated to help cover the cost of cremation.
