William "Bill" Sharp Obituary

William “Bill” W. Sharp, age 73, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020, at St. Joseph/Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born November 12, 1946, in Lexington, Kentucky, Bill was the son of the late Kenneth and Edna Mae Campbell Sharp.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth C. Sharp.

Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Phelps Sharp, whom he married on August 9, 1970; one son, Dan Sharp of Lexington, Kentucky; one daughter, Debby (Jeff) Perry of Winchester, Kentucky;  two grandsons, Dylan Jeffery Perry and Jace William Perry; and a host of cousins.

Bill graduated in 1964 from Lafayette High School.  He began his higher education at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.  After two years he transferred to Morehead State University where he met his future wife, Betty, on the first day of school.  He was an active member of the Wesley Foundation and a work study at the bookstore.  He continued working at the bookstore through completion of his master’s degree, eventually becoming book manager, and then store director.  Upon retirement from MSU in 1998, he worked for Perk’s Home Improvement Store.  He then spent several years as a medical transport driver for Bath Medical Transportation.

He was an accomplished Eagle Scout and often volunteered as a local boy scout leader for his son’s troop.  For many years, he could be found cheering loudly for the Rowan County Senior High School soccer teams that his children played on, never missing a game!  He was a former member of the Morehead Optimist Club and as a retiree, he continued his volunteer work with St. Claire Hospice and Friends of the Rowan County Public Library.  He was an active member of the Morehead First Church of God and could often be found playing music with the Morehead Mountain Strings Dulcimer Club where he was affectionally known as “Betty’s Band-Aid”.  When not playing, he was either driving to an event, helping out, or shlepping the equipment.  He was also an avid NASCAR and die-hard New England Patriots fan.  When not volunteering, Bill could be found working assiduously in his yard or playing with his grandkids.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Halstead officiating.  Burial will follow at New Alfrey Cemetery.
