William Verlin Qualls, age 98, of North Tolliver Road, Morehead, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.
Born June 12, 1923, in Garvin Ridge in Carter County, he was the son of the late Aaron and Lola Brickles Qualls. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Audie Ritchie and Okel Miller.
Verlin’s loving wife of 75 years, Garnett Everman Qualls, whom he married February 9, 1946, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 1, 2021, two days before Verlin’s passing. He is survived by one son, Joel Aaron (Jackie) Qualls of Morehead; one daughter, Mary Gay Lambert of Olive Hill; four grandchildren, Denita (Wayne) Warren, Jamie (Derrick) Armstrong, James Qualls, and Beau (Kristi) Lambert; six great grandchildren, Joshua Warren, Crystal Hunt, Matthew Warren, Frankie and Catie Smith, and Ronnie Beth Lambert; four great-great grandchildren, Addison, Jack and Jake Warren, and Sylas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the 131st Anti-aircraft and Medic Division. Verlin left the Army as a Medic Tech3 Sgt. During his service he traveled through Europe, starting in England, then to France and later into Switzerland and Germany where he spent most of his time during World War II. Verlin fought in the Battle of the Bulge during the Liberation of Bastogne. Verlin was currently a vice president of First Federal Saving & Loan in Morehead where he worked for the past 50 years. He was co-owner of Qualls Wholesale Grocery in Olive Hill for more than 20 years and owned and operated farms in Fleming and Carter counties. He was a member of Three Pines Freewill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and held other leadership positions.
Funeral services for Verlin and Garnett will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Gary Sparks officiating. The service will be live streamed on Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Facebook page beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers: Joshua Warren, James Qualls, Matthew Warren, Beau Lambert, Wayne Warren, Tim Hunt, Randy Day, and Derrick Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be First Federal Saving and Loan Board Members Truman Dehner, Ralph Derrickson, David Perkins, Jonathan Stiles, John Northcutt, and past and present employees.
Visitation for Verlin and Garnett will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
For the safety of everyone, the family requests all attendees please wear masks.
