Velma Lois Wages Banks, age 76, of Clearfield, Kentucky, formerly of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2026, at UK-St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.

She was born November 11, 1949, in Bath County, a daughter of the late Leonard and Mary Garland Wages. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Antonia June Banks Hickey of Shelbyville, Indiana; one brother, Archie Wages of Mason, Tennessee; and one sister, Patricia Wages Barrett of Clearfield.

Velma is survived by one sister, Sondra Wages Peach (Larry) of Franklin, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Matthew Morris of Shelbyville, Indiana, and Caitlin Morris of Clearfield; a special nephew, Joe Barrett of Clearfield; and several other nieces and nephews and friends.

After raising her daughter, Velma attended Morehead State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. She was a faithful Christian, loving mother, and dedicated grandmother. Upon the death of her daughter, she assumed the responsibility of raising her two grandchildren. Velma was a good cook and enjoyed watching American Idol. She loved animals and cared for many stray cats over her lifetime.

Velma will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

A celebration of life will be observed by the family, and burial will be in Owingsville Cemetery.
