Shirley Raikes Obituary

Shirley Ann Rice Raikes, age 83, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at her home.

Born July 28, 1937, in Hawesville, Kentucky, Shirley was the daughter of the late Kenneth C. and Thelma Newman Rice.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Shelby K. Rice, Sr., and one son, Stuart Glen Raikes.

Shirley is survived by one son, Bobby G. Raikes and wife Stacy of Indianapolis, Indiana, one brother, Steve Rice and wife Lisa; two sisters, Shelia Dixon and Stephanie Anthony and husband Van; three grandsons, Zachary and wife Savannah, Cameron, and Jordan; one great granddaughter, Winter; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley retired from the Rowan County school system where she enjoyed teaching social studies and language arts in the seventh and eighth grades for 27 years. Shirley’s introduction to Morehead and Morehead First Baptist Church was as a summer missionary representing the KY Baptist Student Union Board of Ministry. She provided the music and Vacation Bible School curriculum at the Church as well as its four outlying community missions at Elliottville, Slaty Point and Pine Grove. She was adored by the children and youth when she arrived in her teal and white Rambler Continental.  Shirley continued the service to First Baptist and Rowan County Schools teaching children, and she touched many lives. After her marriage to Glen Raikes, she became piano accompanist with faithful service every Sunday morning and evening and Wednesday evening services for over 55 years serving until the virtual worship services began in February of this year.  She loved playing for the Morehead Minstrel and many other community events and especially with vocalist J. C. Black.  She served every Sunday as the registrar for Sunday School registration and attendance officer and climbed four floors to secure the registry and confirm its accuracy until about four years ago.  She was faithful, devoted and dependable attending all services with nearly perfect attendance for those decades of her music ministry and the Women’s Missionary Union.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Lee Cemetery with the Rev. Lauren McDuffie officiating.
