Ronald "Ron" Porter Obituary

Ronald Eugene “Ron” Porter, age 78, of Redwood Lane, Morehead, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022, at U. K. Medical Center in Lexington.

Born November 11, 1943, in Covington, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William C. “Bill” Porter and Ruby Jean Graham Porter.  His wife of 43 years, Mitzie D. Kelsey Porter, whom he married November 11, 1967, preceded him in death on April 23, 2011, as well as one brother, William Roy Porter.

Ron is survived by one son, Ron “Tiger” Porter and wife Darcee of Richmond; two daughters, Lori Porter Butler and husband Erik of Shepherdsville, and Crystal Porter Black of Morehead, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Paige Frankenberg, Emily Porter, Lydia Porter, Brittany Lambert, Maggie Carmack, Ethan Lambert, L’Shae Black, and Tanner Black; and seven great grandchildren.

Other survivors include three brothers, Roger Lee Porter and wife Rita and Larry Wilson Porter and wife Geri, all of Morehead, and Timothy Wayne Porter of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Sarah Jean “Cherry” Murphy of Fayetteville, North Carolina; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and other extended family and many friends.

Ron retired after 35 years of service with GTE as a construction supervisor.  After retirement, he worked for Addington Transportation in Elizabethtown, Utility Service and Supply in Farmers, and Fannin Industries in Morehead. One of his biggest loves of all was his daycare kids and working with Crystal at the daycare. They all loved their Papaw Ronnie. He referred to all of them as his grandchildren.

He was an avid Rowan County sport supporter and enjoyed going to watch his grandson Tanner play baseball. Ronnie loved to play golf with his son Tiger, his brother Larry, and friends and enjoyed being outdoors, doing yard work, and spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

Ronnie loved all of his GTE men who referred to themselves as “Porter’s Polecats”. He spent many years not only being their supervisor, but also their friend. He enjoyed life and never met a stranger. Ronnie will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
