Roger Lee Messer

Roger Lee Messer, 68, of Haldeman Heights, Morehead, departed this life on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 20, 1950, in Morehead, KY, to the late Alex and Geneva Mabry Messer.

Roger was a retired Rowan County Sheriff's Deputy, having worked four years alongside Sheriff Jim Nickell and twelve years with Sheriff Jack Carter. He was a veteran of the Kentucky National Guard.

Roger enjoyed spending time with his beloved family, hunting, and for the past six years, working as a campground host at Zilpo in Bath County. He will be dearly missed by all, including his Zilpo Campground family.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Jack and Denise Arthurs; brothers-in-law, Frank Arthurs and Zora Adkins; and nephews, Mark Messer and Christopher Arthurs.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Wanda Gail, with whom he was baptized in the Church of God faith, in February 1998; three sons, Alex (Melinda) Messer of Olive Hill, Brad and Neil Messer, both of Morehead; two sisters, Genivieve Adkins and Vonda (Bob) Preston, two brothers, Claude (Oveda) Messer and Gary (Joyce) Messer; six grandchildren, Zachary (Megan), Jacob (Kaitlyn), Braddy, Blake, Haley Messer and Daniel Lemons; a great-grand-daughter on the way, Kinley Rose Messer, and several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2019, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Bobby Day and Pastor Andy Lands officiating. Burial will follow in Bradley Cemetery, Dry Branch Road in Carter County, with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers: Zachary Messer, Jacob Messer, Braddy Messer, Daniel Lemons, Jeff Adkins, Khi Adkins, Randy Rice, and Phil Greene. Honorary pallbearers: Jack Carter, James Damron, Larry Jo Stevens, and Bill Baughmen.

Visitation is 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
