Rev. Winston McClurg, age 88, of Morehead, Kentucky, gained his heavenly wings on Sunday, March 21, 2021, following a decline in health at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born on July 29, 1932, in Morgan County, Kentucky, and was the first child of the late Emmitt and Cloie (Smedley) McClurg.
Winston proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Shortly after his return, he married the love of his life, Jeri Blankenship. The two would go on to have three sons and a wonderful lifetime of memories.
In 1972, Winston was called upon by the Lord to build a church. He followed his calling and founded the House of Prayer, Inc. Throughout the last 49 years, he and Jeri have devoted their entire lives to their family and to building the family of God. He has been a great shepherd and heroic guide to countless souls.
While a pillar of the community, he also enjoyed his family immensely and made friendships that lasted throughout his lifetime – friends became family. His genuineness and nature of giving will forever be fondly remembered.
Winston is survived by Jeri, his loving and devoted wife of 66 years; sons, Murv (Lucia), Tim (Louise) and Tom (Alicia), all of Morehead; 7 grandchildren, Kevin McClurg of Portland, Oregon, Cyndi McClurg Manning, Matt McClurg, Jason McClurg, Jessica Howard, Rachel Craft and Jordan Craft, all of Morehead; and 6 great-grandchildren, Carter, Sophie, Mara, Melody, Brantley and Lucas.
Other survivors include two sisters, Lorena Arnett Reynolds and Polly Roberts (Jackie) of Morehead; nieces and nephews, extended family, including his church family, and many friends.
Winston was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Cloie McClurg; one sister, Lee Madill of Florida; and two brothers, Wilbur McClurg of Florida and Wendell McClurg of Morehead.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at the House of Prayer with Brother Joe Cline and Sister Robyn Cline officiating. Visitation for Pastor Winston will be on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 2 p.m. at the House of Prayer, 600 Whispering Oaks, Morehead, KY 40351.
