Phyllis Joan (Laurita) Moore, age 83, of Morehead, Kentucky, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 29, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 13, 1939, in Bay Shore, New York, she was the daughter of the late Robert Rocco Laurita and Mary (Paisano) Laurita. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers; one sister; and a grandson, Peyton Johnson Moore.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Noah Moore and Jennifer of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; four daughters and sons-in law: Robin Donehue and Kevin of Morehead, Regina Stamper and Jeff of Morehead, Naomi “Joan” Robinson and James of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Rachel Ragland and Roy of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
Others to cherish her memory include six beloved grandchildren: Kevin Donehue, Kristopher Donehue, Sophia Henderson, Jessica Keeling, Jennifer Ragland, and Miles Moore; seven precious great grandchildren; extended family and friends.
Phyllis was a strong Christian Woman, one who overcame many obstacles and lived her life serving others. A member of Judah Christian Fellowship, her faith was the center of her universe and her desire to serve ever-present. She served as a missionary to Haiti in extremely rural areas with her children (one to 9 years of age) alongside her. She earned a bachelor’s degree as a non-traditional student and worked as a substitute teacher in Rowan County. A lifelong learner and volunteer, Phyllis was involved in many community organizations including Helping Hands, Encouraging Hearts, and Rowan County Viking Football Boosters. At age 81, she proudly completed her first 5-K Trail Race at Peyton’s Wild and Wacky Race, in memory of her grandson, Peyton. Always spunky and outspoken in a caring manner, her legacy will live on in her children and grandchildren whose lives reflect the values and work ethic instilled in them by their mother and grandmother. They will especially remember one of her favorite sayings: “It doesn’t cost anything to be kind.”
A visitation for family and friends will be held at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals (400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351) from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2022, with a celebration of life beginning at 2 p.m. with speakers Jeff Stamper, Steve Leitz, and Troy Meadows.
