Orvel McReynolds Obituary

Orvel B McReynolds passed peacefully April 22, 2024, at the age of 89 at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

Orvel McReynolds was born on March 25, 1935, in a small house outside of Folsomdale, Kentucky, to his parents, Irene Doris (Allock) McReynolds and Orvel Marvin McReynolds.  He worked the family farm with his father during his youth and later on regional railroad construction.  As a young man he ventured north, moving to Chicago where he met his future wife Shirley Ann Reel. They married, and moved west, settling near Shirley’s childhood home in central Iowa.  There they started a family and raised three daughters.

A powerful man with a booming voice, Orvel's voice and laugh could always be heard above the crowd.  He retired from the maintenance department of the SuperValu warehouse in Urbandale, Iowa, where he’d worked for over 30 years. He was very active in the Milo Christian Union church which was just a few blocks from his farmhouse near the edge of town.

Some of his favorite past times were working on antique cars, attending auto shows and swap meets.  You could often see Orvel and his family driving four of his antique cars in the local parades.  He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren, and hosting bonfires in the barnyard where all the family and church members would bring their lawn chairs and roast hotdogs.  Another long-time tradition during Christmas time was to load up the station wagon with family and friends and to drive through Des Moines’ residential neighborhoods looking for the grandest light displays on the homes.

Orvel is survived by daughters Sherri Meeks (Mike) and Sharon Reynolds (Jason), sisters Ruby Herring (Don) and Malinda Paul (Danny), 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and oldest daughter, Susan Kay (McReynolds) Keller.  While our hearts are heavy with grief, solace is found knowing that he is in Heaven with our Lord and Savior and surrounded by loved ones.

There will be a graveside service at the Belmont Cemetery in Milo at a later date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Milo Christian Union Church, 308 South Spruce, Milo, IA 50166.
