Leora Margaret (Law) McKenzie

Leora Margaret Law McKenzie, age 86, of Morgan Fork Road, Morehead, Ky, passed away Friday, November 25, 2022, at her home.

Born February 17, 1936, in Blaze, KY, she was the daughter of the late Gillard Leslie Law and Elma Florence Perry Law.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings and their spouses:  Edward “Buck” Law and wife Eliza, Alberta “Jo” Brewer and husband Don, and Janice Manley and husband Abe.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 53 years, John P. “Jay” McKenzie, whom she married May 24, 1969; one son, James McKenzie and wife Mary Williams McKenzie of Morehead; one step grandson, Ben Williams of Farmers; and one brother, Gaynes C. Law of Morehead.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends, including those she acquired though her work at St. Claire—the Sisters of Notre Dame, administrators, doctors and nurses, and everyone who helped care for patients. 

When St. Claire Regional Medical Center opened its doors on July 1, 1963, Margaret was the switchboard operator at the hospital and continued in that role for 56 years until she suffered a stroke in May 2019. At St. Claire, it was an annual tradition to celebrate the continued hard work and dedication of Margaret. She loved St. Claire and how it evolved over the years.   “It has changed, but it’s changed for the better... I’m very thankful for all the sisters…and Mr. Neff,” Margaret said during one of the celebrations.  She was always interested in staying abreast of happenings at St. Claire.

Margaret was a devoted family member and especially enjoyed family reunions and other get-togethers.  Christmas was her favorite holiday. She looked forward to spending time with family and friends and adding the annual special edition Barbie Doll to her collection.  She also enjoyed quiet moments on the porch, tending to her flowers, and taking care of Boomer, her favorite doggie. 

She attended Blue Bank First Church of God and formerly Clearfield Tabernacle.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2022, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jeff Fannin and Rev. Jess Brewer officiating.  Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be Mark Law, Donald Law, David Mullin, Ben Williams, Jeff Furnish and Junior Fraley. 

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2022, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
