John Paul “J. P.” McKenzie, age 85, of Morehead, Kentucky, widower of Margaret McKenzie, passed away Friday, August 8, 2025, at UK St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.
Born January 21, 1940, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Andy (Bug) McKenzie and Oda Carpenter McKenzie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Austin, Bill, Mitchell, and Ralph, and sisters, Louise, Carmie, Kathy, and Bonnie.
J. P. and Leora Margaret Law McKenzie were united in marriage on May 24, 1969, and enjoyed nearly 54 years together until her passing on November 25, 2022.
Survivors include a son, James McKenzie, and his wife Mary Williams McKenzie, of Morehead; a step grandson, Ben Williams of Farmers; and two sisters, Helen and Virginia. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
J. P. retired as a State Highway foreman after years of dedicated service. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed squirrel and deer hunting, fishing, walking with his dog Boomer, and riding his 4-wheeler. An avid NASCAR fan, he rarely missed watching a race. Through the years, he and Margaret looked forward to their regularly scheduled trips to Gatlinburg to enjoy the beauty of nature, observe wildlife, attend the Dixie Stampede, and appreciate the holiday lighting and festivities.
J. P. was a member of Phelps Masonic Lodge No. 482 in Farmers. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with Pastor Jeff Fannin officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. by Phelps Masonic Lodge No. 482.
Following the service, burial will be in Brown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be J. C. Suarez, Jeff Furnish, Junior Fraley, Ben Williams, Mark Law, and Tommy Mullins. David Mullins will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
