John Vernon "Vern" Stamper, age 91, of Owens Road, Clearfield, passed away Monday, October 6, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 15, 1934, in Rowan County, Vern was the son of the late William Hollie Stamper and Ethel Lambert Stamper McBrayer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William L. and Arvilla Crum Lambert; paternal grandparents, Jack and Renda Sublett Stamper; and one sister, Judy Stamper Dunaway Riggsby.
Vern is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gail Howard Stamper, whom he married in Sandy Hook on May 6, 1961; his devoted son, Stan Dominic Stamper of Clearfield; his special granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Stamper; a special aunt, Bessie Lambert of Clearfield; two nieces, Michelle and Stephanie Dunaway; as well as other extended family and friends.
He was a 1956 graduate of Morehead State University, earning a business degree. Vern proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After his military service, he worked as a bookkeeper for Morehead & Northfork Railroad until its closing, and later served as a district monitor for the Kentucky Department of Human Resources until his retirement in 1996. Following retirement, he continued bookkeeping work from home for several local businesses.
Vern was a life member of Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 and a proud Kentucky Colonel. He was a U.K. fan and an avid outdoorsman who loved watching and spending time in nature, especially wade fishing, small game hunting, and gardening.
At his request, there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Clearfield Cemetery, with his brother-in-law Dail Howard officiating. Full military honors will be presented by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Pallbearers: Dail Howard, Sean Howard, Jeff Caudill, Lincoln Caudill, Stan Stamper, and John Northcutt.
