John Clay “J. C.” Black, age 91, of Hill Court, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, November 14, 2022, at his residence.
Born September 27, 1931, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Samuel Black and Josephine Cassity Black. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 siblings.
His wife of 57 years, Emma Myrtilla Edgerton Black, whom he wed April 2, 1954, preceded him in death on September 14, 2011, and one son, Timothy Lee Black on January 31, 2013.
J.C. is survived by three sons and their wives, John and Becky Black of Owingsville, Kentucky, Dan and Gwen Black of Brooksville, Kentucky, Greg and Freida Black of Rydal, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Flannery Black of Louisville; five grandchildren, Sarah Black, Jared Black, Kamryn Black, Jonathan Black, and Samuel Black; three great grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.
He was eight years old during the flood of 1939, and the family home was washed away and they barely escaped. He began working at a young age hauling lumber. J. C. managed the Sinclair and the Red Head gas stations, and was a road foreman for the State Highway Department in Rowan County. He completed his work career as a log scaler for J. C. Wells & Sons for over 30 years and Fannin Industries for 10 years.
J. C. was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morehead. He enjoyed singing and was well known for his beautiful voice. He will be remembered with love and greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Bill Black, nephew, officiating. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery in Midland. The service will be live streamed at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Facebook page beginning at 11 a.m.
