Joan Brown Cox, age 92, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, April 13, 2026, at UK St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.
Born August 30, 1933, in Trimble County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Herman Brown and Irene Ginn Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Charles Cox; her son, Gary Edward Cox; and two brothers, Robert Brown and Allen Brown.
Joan and Gary met while attending Morehead State University and were married on June 2, 1957. Following their graduation, they spent the next eight years teaching in various states while pursuing advanced degrees. In 1970, they returned to Morehead, where Gary taught geography at Morehead State University and Joan taught second grade at Hillsboro Elementary School in Fleming County.
Joan was an active member of the League of Women Voters, Painted Hills Garden Club, and the Morehead Woman’s Club. She also enjoyed substitute teaching at various schools and traveling. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Morehead.
She is survived by one daughter, Deborah Canales of Morehead, Kentucky; one grandson, Charles Canales of Sugar Land, Texas; one sister, Glenetta Hammons of Morehead, Kentucky; and one brother, Freddie Brown of Louisville, Kentucky.
Joan will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Aaron Coyle-Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
