Hunter Mitchell Obituary

Hunter Keegan Mitchell, age 13, also known as “Coach Hunter,” won his battle with neuroblastoma at his home in Clearfield, Kentucky, on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born October 8, 2006, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, he is survived by his father, Bradley Mitchell and Tonya of Harold, Kentucky; one brother, Kamdyn Wentz of Lexington, Nebraska; three sisters, Candace Howell of Harold, Kentucky, and Keauna and Kaydience Wentz, both of San Diego, California; paternal grandparents, John and Brenda Mitchell of Bomont, West Virginia; maternal grandparents, Lewis and Patricia Tate of Lexington, Nebraska; paternal great grandmother, Linda “Nan” Arbaugh of Clearfield, Kentucky; paternal great grandmother, Barbara Graham of Bomont, West Virginia; two aunts, Stacy Mitchell of Bomont, West Virginia, and Morgan Tate of Lexington, Nebraska; a niece, Kinzley Howell; three cousins, Matthew and Trenton Mitchell and Brentlee McKinney; other relatives and his Vikings team he loved so much and referred to as “His Boys.”

He was preceded in death by paternal great grandfathers, Larry Arbaugh, Teddy Graham, and Calvin “Roger” Johnson; maternal great grandparents, Walter and Verna Flint; paternal great-great grandparents, Ted and Charlotte Hypes; and paternal great aunt, Pamela Johnson.

Hunter was an inspiration to many as he battled neuroblastoma cancer four times since age 2 ½ years.  He was adored by everyone who met him and despite his illness enjoyed hunting, fishing, video games, riding his motorcycle, playing with friends, and hover boarding.   One of his greatest joys was being named “Coach Hunter” by Vikings basketball Coach Thacker.  “Coach Hunter” was passionate about the basketball teams and being the assistant coach and participating in team activities brought him much pleasure.    On November 10, 2019, his four-point buck fulfilled one of his lifelong goals and brought tears to his eyes.

Hunter will forever be remembered and loved by those who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Sunday, February 9, 2020, at Rowan County Senior High School with Bro. Mike Rogers and Bro. Jared Green officiating.  Burial will follow at the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Bomont, West Virginia, with Pastor Timmy Hobbs officiating.

Pallbearers:  Matthew Mitchell, Scott Boggs, Bo Miller, Roger Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Jerry “JD” Hypes.  Honorary Pallbearers:  Vikings basketball coaches and JV and Varsity basketball teams.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020, at Rowan County Senior High School, 499 Viking Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
