Gloria Garrard Obituary

Gloria E. McCarty Garrard, age 85, of Bath Avenue, Owingsville, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2020, at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehab Center with her beloved family by her side.

Born March 28, 1934, in Owingsville, she was one of 12 children born to the late Woodson and Nancy Hunt McCarty. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estill Garrard on December 29, 1988; five brothers, Jack, Herbert, Charles, Jimmy, and Dewey McCarty; and four sisters, Norma Stone, Mary Riddle, Christine Bailey, and infant Louise McCarty.

Gloria is survived by two sisters, Susie Trent and Minnie McCarty, both of Owingsville; several nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Although Gloria and Estill had no children of their own, she raised many nieces and nephews along the way in a loving and nurturing family similar to her own upbringing and was a great influence in their lives. Gloria was an accomplished farmer and cook and took the absolute best care of her home. She loved sewing, gardening and sitting on the porch talking with precious friends.

In addition, she was a loyal employee of Jockey International for 47 years and received many awards and accolades for her excellent service and diligent work.  She was known for saying, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth being done right.”

Her family was her most prized possession and time spent with them brought her an immeasurable amount of joy.  She enjoyed waiting for her babies—Chandler, Victoria, and Zack—to come from school and preparing a meal for them.  She loved family get-togethers and was known for her signature dishes such as salmon salad, cherry cobbler and macaroni and cheese.

A lifelong member of the East Fork Church of God, she greatly enjoyed the fellowship with her church family and being a part of all the church activities.  Gloria is loved by so many and touched numerous lives along her earthly journey. She will remain in the hearts of her loved ones forever.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2020, at East Fork Church of God with the Rev. Billy Harmon officiating. Burial will follow at Longview Cemetery in Bethel.
