Gladys (McGill) Lykins

Gladys McGill Lykins, age 93, of Morehead, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021, at St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.

Born May 6, 1928, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Dan McGill and Nancy Stidam McGill.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Madeline Lykins, Juanita McGill and Agnes McGill. 

Gladys was also preceded in death by her husband, Chester J. Lykins; one daughter, Rhonda Webb; one son, Lt. Col. Danny Arthur Lykins; and one granddaughter, Robin Glover.

She is survived by three daughters, Lola Katherine “Kathy” Manning of Morehead, Edna Glover and husband Charles of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Delores Franklin of Mt. Sterling; 11 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren.

A staple in the community, Gladys was a familiar, friendly face at Norge Village Laundry and Dry Cleaners for more than 32 years. During her career, she enjoyed serving numerous Rowan County residents and MSU students, most of whom she knew by names, faces, or clothing.  And her cheerful, helpful nature reinforced her motto: “It will all come out in the wash.” When Glady retired after 23 years, she was featured in the local newspaper.  She enjoyed working with the public so much, she came out of retirement to work an additional nine years at Norge Village.  Never one to be idle, she enjoyed sewing, doing alterations, quilting and reading.  When her five children were young, Gladys made all types of clothing for them, including dresses with frilly ruffles and lace trim. She loved sewing – and everything was crafted to perfection. Gladys loved her family and eagerly catered to special wants—biscuits and gravy, breakfast at Jerry’s, or reminiscing about family history.  She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.  Gladys was a longtime member of Morehead First Church of God.

A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Allan Hutchinson and the Rev. Jeremy Halstead officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers:  Paul Manning, David Manning, Col. Franklin L. Jones, Bradley Ryan Jones, James L. Jones, and Dr. Tyler Franklin.  Honorary pallbearers:  Charles Glover, Judge Donald Blair, Roma Webb, Jr.  and Brett Lykins.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
