She was born in Lexington, KY August 23, 1940, the daughter of the late Bernard Burton and Ruby Mae Dingus Burton. She grew up in Morehead, KY attending University Breckenridge School, then Morehead State University. She married Arthur D. Johnson Jr. and resided in Morehead, KY for 18 years. Then later met Dr. Jerry L. Slaughter to whom she was married and lived in Texas many years.
She was known as “Momaw” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. So very proud of them all!
Gayle would always say “I never meet a stranger” with a beautiful smile on her face. She could make friends anywhere and encouragement was one of her many gifts. She was also a gifted gardener, quilt maker, painter, and played a few instruments, especially the guitar. She enjoyed reading, traveling, garage sales, spending time with family and attending church where she also sang in the choir.
Preceding her in death was husband, Dr. Jerry L Slaughter; brother Leon Burton and wife Miriam; brother-in-law Blane Kissick; and son-in-law Jack Crane.
She is survived by her sister Regina Kissick; daughter Judy Hendrix Acebo and husband Tony; daughter Janet Crane; son David Johnson and wife Teresa; grandchildren Mark Hendrix II (Lindsey), Kaycee Brown (Drew), Jordan Jones (Allen), Colton Johnson, Kylie Johnson, Alisha Wajiku, Casey Crane, Jaclan Johnson (Jeremy), Andrea Longoria (Abel) and Rachel Crane; and beloved great grandchildren. From her union with Jerry are stepsons Leslie, Micah, Jody and Jeremy Slaughter and stepdaughter Sheila Richey and their lovely families.
Our family is very grateful for the care and respect she received at Windcrest Health and Rehabilitation and Hendrick Hospice in Abilene, Texas, before her journey to her heavenly home.
