Duane Burrows Obituary

Duane E. Burrows died peacefully at his home in Morehead at the age of 85 on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, after a six-year bout with prostate cancer.  Born in Friendship, NY, on November 17, 1937, he was next to the youngest of seven brothers and one sister. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Burrows, his father, and all of his siblings. Raised in Friendship, NY, he graduated from Friendship High School and married his high school sweetheart Marjorie E. Gray of Friendship, NY, December 20, 1958.

He was accepted into an apprenticeship in the Tool and Die shop at Harrison Radiator, a division of General Motors, in Lockport, NY and they moved near there to Newfane, NY where they had daughter, Joanne E. Burrows, and son, Dr. Craig H. Burrows, now of Morehead, KY.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, and daughter-in-law Brenda Burrows. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Dr. Rachael Kelsey and husband Sean, Caleb Burrows and wife Tori, Luke Burrows and fiancée Elaina Ward, all of Morehead, KY, and Dr. Josiah C. Burrows and wife Dr. Morgan Sindall of Lexington, KY.  He has four great grandchildren Oliver, Liam, Claire and Natalie and expecting a fifth. His favorite canine friend, golden doodle “Adele” will miss him greatly.

He went on in Harrisons to become a Model Maker and worked for 40 years, retiring in April of 1998. During that time, he travelled with the company to Luxembourg, Spain, and Italy to set up Radiator Divisions for General Motors European subsidiary OPEL.

He was a passionate member and active trustee of Ridgeway Bible Church in Lockport, NY for the 56 years they lived in Newfane. He was active in the not-for-profit Opportunities Unlimited in Niagara County, NY, where he was on the board of directors and did numerous fundraisers to benefit special needs children.

At 17, he attended the Boys JIM (Jesus is Mine) Club, a Christian leadership training camp for boys in Chautauqua, NY.  Son Craig attended the camp in the 1970’s and 80’s as did grandsons, Josiah, Caleb and Luke later.  He was actively involved in this not-for-profit for over 40 years on the board of directors as a fundraiser, building raiser, and maintenance specialist.  The campgrounds of this small Christian camp in Western NY bear the fingerprints everywhere of his labor.

The family moved to Morehead, KY in the summer of 2014 in order to be “Papa” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren and to be closer to attend baseball games, tennis and golf matches, school plays and graduations and family weddings and celebrations.  He enjoyed fixing everything.  He raised gladiolas and lilies that rose sometimes to 6 feet tall and has passed that love on to his daughter, Joanne.
