Dr. Joe F. Bendixen, age 93, of Morehead, KY, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024. He was born January 27, 1931, in Terril, IA. He was predeceased by his wife, Donna; and brothers and sisters, Leonard, Irene, Roy, Howard, and LaVon.
Joe is survived by daughters, Nancy (Joe) Myers of Lexington, Kentucky, and Mary (Bill) Noe of Gallipolis, Ohio; son, Jim of Fernandina Beach, FL; and grandsons, Jeremy Noe of Gallipolis, OH, Jason (Shruti) Noe of Houghton, MI, and Matthew Myers of Lexington.
Joe graduated high school from Estherville, IA; received his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He launched his teaching career in State Center, Iowa; and began the Agriculture Education Program at Morehead State University, until he retired in 1995. He was awarded the American FFA Degree, which is the highest honor awarded to those who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in agriculture.
Joe was a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the Air Force. He was an Honor Guard for President Eisenhower during that time and was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. Joe and Donna enjoyed traveling both in the United States and abroad. They took trips throughout Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand.
Joe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family always came first. We hope to honor our father by living a life that reflects his values of love, compassion, and selflessness. In addition to family, Joe was a farmer at heart. The following poetic phrase is borrowed but reflects the core of our father:
“Put away your tools, and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended. You raised a fine family, worked the land well under the hot sun. Hang up your shovel inside the barn; your work on earth is done.”
Visitation will be held at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals (400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351) on Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2024, at Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church (309 Battson Avenue, Morehead, KY 40351). Interment will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
