Dr. Glenn Earl Johnston, age 86, of Morehead, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born January 16, 1933, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late William D. and Ollie B. Johnston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jerry Head, and three brothers, Buck, Edward, and Billy D. Johnston.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Eva S. Johnston, whom he wed on October 17, 1954; two daughters, Anita K. Bolen (Kim Bolen) of Waddy, KY and Alicia J. Carter (Dewayne Carter) of Morehead, KY; and two grandsons, Eric Blake Carter and Brian Glenn Carter, both of Morehead.
The family extends great appreciation to their loving church family at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead, KY, his devoted caregivers, St. Claire Hospice team, and Dr. Christian Weigel for his outstanding and compassionate care throughout the years.
Dr. Johnston lived a life dedicated to education. He earned his high school diploma at Seymour High School in Seymour, Texas. He then attended North Texas State College and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education. Following this, Dr. Johnston earned his Master's Degree in Mathematics at Texas Technological College. Finally, Glenn Johnston earned his PhD. in Mathematics at Texas Tech University.
Dr. Glenn Johnston served much of his life as an educator. He taught at Plainview High School in Plainview, TX; Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX; Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX; and upon earning his PhD. at Texas Tech University, Dr. Johnston moved himself and his family to Morehead, KY where he started as a Professor and became Department Head of Mathematics at Morehead State University from 1969-1992.
Throughout Glenn's life, he remained a faithful follower of Christ until the very end. He was a devoted member and Elder at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead, KY and served as a Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer, and Board Chairman.
In Dr. Johnston's free time he took on a variety of hobbies and pastimes. He challenged his intelligence daily and emphasized his commitment to learn something new every day. He took on sewing, gardening, oil painting, and stain glass production. Glenn also raised and displayed tropical fish. In addition to all these, Glenn volunteered his time for the Morehead Community Band, Kiwanis Club, and St. Claire Hospice.
Glenn Johnston's happiest moments were spent travelling the world with his best friend, soul mate, and wife; spending time with his beloved family; raising two independent daughters; and teaching his grandsons to become great men.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead, KY with the Rev. Don Chase officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery.
Brian Carter, Eric Carter, Jack Whidden, Mark Etherton, Joe Barrett, David Perkins, Gary VanMeter, and Lloyd Jaisingh will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2019, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jean Mack Fund or Love Memorial Fund, Morehead First Christian Church, 227 E Main Street, Morehead KY 40351.
