Darrell Gene “Monk” Wages, age 81, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Ephraim-McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville after an extended illness.
Darrell, or “Monk” as he was known to all of his friends and family, was a lifelong resident of Midland. Darrell picked up the nickname Monk when he was a little boy and kept it his whole life.
Monk was born on March 8, 1941, in Midland and was the youngest son of the late Arnold and Lona Booth Wages of Farmers. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brothers, Zane Wages and Harlan Wages, and his niece, Ronda Wages.
Monk is survived by his beloved nephew, Lee Wages, of Midland; his older brother, Charles Wages and his wife Charlene of Sheffield, Alabama; his niece, Greta Wages Rundles and her husband John of Northport, Alabama; his nephew, John Arnold Wages of Sheffield, Alabama; his niece, Sherry Wages of Nitro, West Virginia; sister-in-law, Shirley Wages of Morehead; his nephew, Bruce Wages, and niece, Pam Wages, both of Morehead. Monk also has many cousins and extended family members.
Monk was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan and a character who never failed to entertain friends and family whenever he was around. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Monk’s family would like to send special thanks to all the staff at Wolfe County Health and Rehabilitation for the excellent care they provided Monk during the six years he resided there.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the Jones Cemetery in Midland with Pastor Rusty Hedrick officiating.
