Brenda Sparks Obituary

Brenda F. Scaggs Sparks, age 83, of Pennington Flat Road, Morehead, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2025, at U.K-St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.

Born January 13, 1942, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Loranza and Nola Parker Scaggs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bud Scaggs, and three sisters, Virginia Mae Scaggs, Joyce Parish, and Maxine Parish.

Brenda’s husband of 57 years, James L. Sparks, whom she married September 6, 1956, passed away on August 2, 2014. 

She is survived by two sons, Rick Sparks and wife Marie of Preston and Matt Sparks and wife Tracy of Morehead; one daughter, Karen DeVaney and husband Greg of Morehead; eight grandchildren, Jamie Sparks, Sheena Sparks, Matt Martin and Tabitha, Katy Carswell and Luke, D. J. Warren and Hannah, Miranda Reck and Nelson, Haley Egan and Jason and Haven DeVaney; and nine great grandchildren, Ross Sparks, Hannah Sparks, Ray Sparks, Bucky Egan, Rylee Carswell, Alexis Carswell, Kane Martin, Kameron Martin, and Lucious Warren. 

Other survivors include one sister, Ruth Blevins of Morehead, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, including her K-9 companion GiGi. 

Brenda lived each day to the fullest and brought much joy to family and friends in the process.  She had a strong work ethic and enjoyed working as a department manager at Heck’s in Morehead for a number of years and later at Stone and Thomas Department Store in Ashland.

Family was precious to Brenda and she was passionate about caring for everyone.  Whether she was working on the farm, cooking someone’s favorite dish, or frying her famous fried chicken, she always made time to meet the needs of each family member.  For many years she cared for her husband during his illness and forever treasured the time they spent with their children and grandchildren.

In her spare time, Brenda enjoyed quilting, photography, creating family photos, and visiting with family and friends.  She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers: Karen DeVaney, Rick Sparks, Matt Sparks, Greg DeVaney, Jamie Sparks, Haley Egan and Haven DeVaney.  Honorary Pallbearers: Nephews and Perry Sloan.

Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
