Bobby Gene Johnson

Bobby Gene Johnson, age 82, of Maxey Flat Road, Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2020, at U.K. HealthCare in Lexington.

Born July 4, 1938, in Clearfield, he was the son of the late Bridges and Venice Ellis Johnson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gene Edward Johnson on December 21, 2007, and one daughter, Penny Bowman on November 7, 2020.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Shirley Terrell Johnson, whom he married January 24, 1978; one son, Rickey Dale Johnson and wife Tina of Portsmouth, Ohio; two daughters, Tammy Darby and husband Jeff of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Glenda Edward of Bethpage, Tennessee; 14 grandchildren, Travis Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Shannon Darby, Jared Darby, Jeremy Darby, Sydney Johnson, Dalton Johnson, Jonathan Bowman, Alexandria McClain, Sarah Bowman, Kelly Bowman, Makayla Bowman, Amanda Bowman, and Nicole Brewer; and 15 great grandchildren.

Other survivors include one brother, Larry Johnson and wife Barb of Morehead; one sister, Peggy Hardin and husband Larry of Morehead; son-in-law, Johnny Bowman of Morehead; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobby was a former crew leader with the U.S. Forest Service, a former school bus driver for the Rowan County Board of Education, and a self-employed carpenter completing jobs in Rowan and surrounding counties.  He enjoyed listening to Bluegrass gospel music, being involved with church activities and attending Sunday church services and revivals.  Bobby also enjoyed spending time with his family, spoiling his grandchildren, and telling stories—he was a walking history book!  He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. 

Private funeral services will be held Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Little Mary Baptist Church with Pastor Jared DeAtley and Pastor Jim DeAtley officiating.  The funeral service will be livestreamed beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday on the Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Facebook page.  Private burial will be at the Little Mary Cemetery.
