Betty Sue Carter Layne, age 78, of Evans Road, Salt Lick, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born December 14, 1946, in Lexington, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Edgar Lee Carter and Flossie Wilson Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Hope Layne, on August 30, 2015.
Sue is survived by her devoted husband of 25 years, Kenneth Layne, whom she married on September 6, 2000; one daughter, Paige Livingston (Ben) of Lascassas, Tennessee; four stepchildren, Kenneth Layne (Sarah), Daniel Layne, Joshua Layne (Amanda), and Anna Marie Rucker (Jaron); nine beloved grandchildren, Cameron, Christian, Kaytlyn, Jacob, Joshua, Josiah, Kennedy, Huntley, and Cybil; as well as several great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include one brother, Donald Carter of Morehead; three sisters, Debra Black and Dana Daniels, both of Morehead, and Linda Bowling of Florence; along with several nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
Sue retired after 18 years of dedicated service as custodian of the Camden-Carroll Library at Morehead State University, where she was honored with the Distinguished Service Award and the Random Act of Kindness Award. She was also a proud member of the Staff Congress at MSU.
A gifted pianist and songwriter, Sue loved sharing her music and was a faithful member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Timothy Cayten officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ben Livingston, Zach Cobb, Jaron Rucker, Joseph Burks, Ken Layne III, Joshua Layne, Joshua Layne Jr., and Joseph Hammel.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
