Obituary

Reverend Dr. William M. Hawkins, Poet, Composer, and Minister died Tuesday April 10, 2007 at UK Medical Center. Born May 14, 1942, a native of Switzer, Kentucky he graduated from Franklin County High School in 1960. He played tuba for Georgetown College and graduated with a degree in music education. After teaching music for several years, he graduated with a master of divinity and doctorate of ministry from Lexington Theological Seminary. A minister since 1969, Hawkins retired as pastor of Clintonville Christian Church in 2004. As a Disciple of Christ minister, he served churches in Burgin, Dawson Springs, Owingsville, Nicholasville Lancaster and Flint, MI. He was active in many interfaith and equal rights groups. Serving as the chair of Christian Unity Commission, he initiated the first Thanksgiving service that included members of several faiths including Jews, Muslims, Baha-is, Hindus, and Christians in Flint Michigan in 1990. Dr. Hawkins wrote a plethora of music compositions and arrangements for high school bands, men-s chorus, church choirs, and men-s trio. The premiere of his symphony -Symphony of the Soul- was performed by the Lexington Community Orchestra in February 2004. He is survived by his wife, Julia Schombur Hawkins, mother Sibyl Poe Hawkins, sister, Peggy Hawkins Moore (Sonny), children: Cindy Hawkins Cyrus, Randy Hawkins(Betty), Kim Hawkins (Arlene), Patrick Hawkins (Shannon), and Joe McGovern. Grandchildren: Megan, Brittany, Chandler, Elizabeth, Colby, Peyton, and Christian. Special friends: Jennifer Weber and Kasey. He is preceded in death by his father William Linden Hawkins, sons, K. Michael McGovern, and Steven McGovern. Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, 2007 at First Christian Church Morehead, KY at 11:00a.m. Officiating are Rev. Dr. William B. Kincaid III and Rev. J. Gregory Alexander. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge 1500 College Way, Lexington, KY 40502.
