William Bill
Gilmore Poage
May 14, 1938 — Dec 3, 2014
William 'Bill' Gilmore Poage, 76, of Morehead, entrepreneur, mentor, and loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born May 14, 1938, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Covington, he was the son of the late Robert Aubrey Poage and Louise Blackerby Poage. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Ross Hough. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pfeffer Poage, whom he wed June 8, 1963, and their five children: Michelle Ann Hardin and Wes; William Troy Poage and Lisa; Kristi Shay Bauer and Kevin; Scott Gerard Poage and Kellyn; and Jonathan Aaron Poage and Alicia; 6 grandchildren: Morgan, Madison, Lauren, Aaron, Cameron, and Mason; two brothers, Robert Poage, Jr. of Lexington and Joseph Poage of Nicholasville; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Bill completed one year of college at the University of Kentucky and then decided he was ready for the business world. He began a printing business in Brooksville called Poage Printing. This was the start of a successful career that eventually led to an opportunity in Morehead where he partnered with his brother-in-law, William Hough, and two CPAs from Ashland. Later, Bill became the sole owner of American Office Supply, which eventually became American Business Systems. The office supply business grew into a dual operation to include printing. Bill was always able to forecast the changing market demands and moved into the sale of various office equipment, including adding machines and typewriters, then later memory writers. Bill again realized the changing times and became an authorized sales agent for Xerox, Inc. The Xerox business started with a small territory and has grown to more than 63 counties in Kentucky. The names of his businesses reflected Bill's patriotism and love for his country. He served in the United States Army Reserves for six years. Bill retired in 2010, and his sons and son-in-law carry on his successful business. Bill loved everything about life. His license plate read 'Life is Good' and to him it was. It was the simple things that meant so much to him. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, family was the focus of his life. Always a kid at heart, Bill enjoyed making holidays, vacations and even day-to-day activities fun for his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved gardening and working with his fountains and goldfish pond. Other passions were camping, boating, and skiing. His passed all of these outdoor loves to his children. Bill was a devoted member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church. To friends, colleagues and those he didn't even know, Bill will be remembered as a gentle, kind man who was silently generous. By his example, he taught his family to always strive to live in a way pleasing to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
