Walter W. Carr, age 95, of Allen Avenue, Morehead, businessman, community leader, teacher and coach, and lifelong supporter of Morehead State University, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015. Born October, 26, 1919, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Otto P. and Sarah Ann Dennis Carr. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Carr Reynolds; one son, Mike Carr; and his wife of 56 years, Jewell Kidd Carr, who passed away April 3, 2013. Walter is survived by two daughters, Susan Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cindy Jones of Ojai, California; two sons, Walter Dennis Carr of Charleston, South Carolina, and Richard Carr of Dana Point, California; two stepchildren, Brenda Reeves and Pat Carr, both of Covington, Louisiana; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. A 1938 University Breckinridge School graduate, Walter earned a bachelor's degree from Morehead State University and a master's degree from Boston University. His college career was interrupted from January 5, 1942, until May 14, 1945, while he proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a P-39 and P-38 fighter pilot in the Southwest Pacific. Following his military service and completion of his college education, Walter spent several years as teacher, principal, and coach in schools in Sudbury, Massachusetts, Higginsport, Ohio, and Jacksonville, Florida. As part owner and operator of Carr Lumber Company, Walter was also actively engaged in community and university activities. He served two terms as a member of the MSU Board of Regents and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club and longtime member of the Lions Club. His interest in athletics never waned. At Breck, he played high school baseball and basketball (a member of the 1936-37 regional championship team that went to the state tournament), and ran the mile relay on the track team. At MSU, he played basketball and baseball. Always a supporter of the athletic program, Walter was a member of the MSU Quarterback Club and a charter member of the Morehead 'M' Club. He was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980 and received numerous honors for his support, including a special alumni recognition on his 82nd birthday. Walter frequented all kinds of athletic practices and games, often voicing his opinion, but always supporting the players and coaches. He attended the Kentucky High School Boys Basketball Tournament for more than 50 years, traveled with the Eagles to numerous states, and attended major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, World Series, and Winter Olympics in Canada. A well-known golfer who enjoyed the sport for more than 60 years, Walter made the first hole-in-one at Sunny Brook Golf Course. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
