Obituary

Vonda Kay Griffith North, age 66, of Sugarloaf Mountain Road, Morehead, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born January 6, 1949, in Greenup, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Ruben Griffith and Virgie Rose Griffith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Phillip Griffith. Kay is survived by her husband, W. Scott North, whom she married December 1, 1967; one son, Christopher North and wife Wendi of Hebron; one daughter, Melissa Leuenberger and husband Tim of Morehead; and five grandchildren, Audrey, Benjamin and Olivia North and Aiden and Sydney Leuenberger. Other survivors include three brothers, Ruben Michael and Cindy Griffith and Paul Griffith, all of Greenup and Leroy Griffith of Southern Illinois; four sisters, Drs. Betty and Arvis Porter of Morehead (who were Kay's mentors with whom she lived during her college years); Wanda and Phillip Horsley of Greenup; Stella and Steve Lawless of Flatwoods; and Joyce and Tom Ruby of Minford, Ohio; sister-in-law, Mary (Mrs. Phillip) Griffith of Greenup; nieces and nephews; extended family; and friends. Kay graduated from University Breckinridge School, received the ADN at Morehead State University and the BSN at the University of Kentucky. Her career in nursing spanned more than twenty years as a registered nurse and educator. She was a pediatric nurse at St. Claire Regional Medical Center, director of LPN Nursing and Allied Health at Rowan Vocational Technical College, and Coordinator of the Nursing Tutorial Lab at Morehead State University. Many nurses and respiratory therapists in the area will identify as one of her students. Kay was always passionate about giving the best care to all patients and was recognized as an especially wonderful caregiver to children. Kay enjoyed art, photography, traveling, flowers, gardening, and her beloved Shih Tzus. 'Nana' lovingly dedicated her last years to her grandchildren. Kay was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Curt Lowndes and Bro. Jack Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers: Troy Griffith, Brian Griffith, Benjamin North, Jack Clark, Michael North, Mason Thacker. Honorary Pallbearers: Darrell Griffith, William Skaggs, Matthew North Visitation is 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
