Virgil Samuel "Red" Maggard, age 80, formerly of Carter County, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the Life Care Center, in Morehead.
Born August 15, 1942, in Carter County, he was the son of the late Ercel and Beulah Lewis Maggard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ella Mae Maggard Johnson, and two brothers, Lloyd Maggard and Bill Maggard and his wife Emma.
He is survived by three nieces, Mary Maggard, Jama Arthurs and husband Moe, and Sheila Sloan, all of Olive Hill; one nephew, Rodney Campbell and Denise Adams of Vienna, West Virginia; 9 great nieces and nephews; nine great-great nieces and nephews, as well as numerous extended family and friends who loved "Uncle Red."
Despite being blind since birth, "Uncle Red" lived every day to the fullest as an independent person. He participated in all family activities growing up and loved farming and various outdoor activities. Inside, he could maneuver from room to room, identify people by footsteps or voice, and loved people, especially children. "Uncle Red" was helpful to anyone who needed help and was beloved by family and friends alike. Virgil "Red" was saved and baptized and enjoyed attending weekly church services at the nursing home. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as "Uncle Red."
A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Victor Mabry officiating. Burial will follow in Jacobs Cemetery in Carter County.
Pallbearers: Jeffrey Sloan, Cody Arthurs, Jason Bays, Virgil Stamper III, Troy Littleton, Rodney Campbell, Cruz Littleton, and Matthew Arthurs.
Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
