Rev. Virgil Jay Harmon, age 97, of Clearfield, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at his home. Born September 12, 1916, in Bourbon County, he was the son of the late Bruce and Emma Honaker Harmon. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Loraine Harmon, Hannah Margaret Cameron, and Elizabeth Pursley, and two brothers, Willie Harmon and Charles Harmon. Virgil is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Maxine Wyant Harmon, two sons, Edward Benjamin and Sharon Harmon and Michael Paul and Karen Harmon, all of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Tammy Redmond, Michelle Allen, Dawn Bilbrey, Brian Harmon, Kim Gooding, Jeff Harmon, Emilie Williams, and Trent Harmon; 8 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Clifford Harmon of Springfield, Ohio. In 1942, Virgil was ordained as a minister in the Church of God. He pastored churches in four states, preached in 18 states, did evangelistic work throughout his life, and always carried a great burden for the lost souls. Rev. Harmon received numerous certificates for his ministry in the state of Kentucky and led prayer groups at the Anderson Indiana Convention. He attended farrier science school in the sixties at the University of Tennessee and had a great love for horses. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Wendell Ford and was the recipient of an athletic achievement award from the Kentucky House of Representatives. Virgil always recognized the importance of physical fitness and made many lifelong friends while walking or jogging. He walked five miles on his 90th birthday and later that year participated in the National Senior Citizens competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he placed second in walking. He also enjoyed hunting and writing poetry. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Visitation is 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Clearfield Tabernacle First Church of God. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Clearfield Tabernacle First Church of God with Dr. Arlo Newell of Anderson, Indiana, officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Brad Mullins, Anthony Molihan, Ben Tackett, Cecil Ison, Don Curtis, and David Cooper. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Clearfield Tabernacle First Church of God. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
