Obituary

Mr. Vinson Alan Watts, Sr., 78, of Allen Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2008, after a long illness, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. Born December 23, 1929, at Watts, Kentucky, in Breathitt County, he is the son of the late Leslie and Annie Fugate Watts. Vinson received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Berea College and a Master-s Degree in Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He was the Associate Dean of Labor at Berea College before coming to Morehead State University in 1968 as their first Personnel Director. He retired from M.S.U. in 1985. He was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church. Other accomplishments he attained throughout his life were past president of the Watts Reunion Incorporated; the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth by the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America; Vice Chairman of the E. O. Robinson Mountain Fund Board; past president of the Rowan County Public Library Board of Trustees; and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award in Sustainable Agriculture from the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center for his heirloom tomato variety, the Vinson Watts tomato. Vinson was also active in the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, including serving as the co-chair of the Health and Insurance Committee and was instrumental in the formation of the Morehead Community Federal Credit Union. He and Patty were members of the Merry Mixers of the Morehead United Methodist Church. For 55 years he was the beloved husband of Patricia Ann Ascough Watts, also of Morehead. Other survivors include two sons, Vinson Alan Jr. and Claudette Watts of Morehead and Patrick and Patricia Watts of Montgomery Village, Maryland; two grandsons, Vinson Alan (Tripp) Watts, III and Leslie Todd Watts, also of Morehead; a sister, Martha Watts of Scottsburg, IN; two nieces, Allene Miller and her husband Sherill of Scottsburg, IN and Mollie Pearl Duckett and her husband Willard of Bloomington, IN; two brothers-in-law, Dr. James Ascough of West Lafayette, IN, and Larry Ascough of Garland, TX; and a special caregiver, Mary Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mollie Watts. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted at the gravesite by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers: Thomas Albert, Tripp Watts, Todd Watts, John Osborne, Randy Day, and John Alcorn Honorary Pallbearers: E. O. Robinson Mountain Fund Board Members. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Berea College.
