Obituary

Verlan D. Black, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Mr. Black is survived by his adored wife, Carolyn Blankenship Black, whom he wed September 2, 1972, and three beloved children, Sherry Jane (Winston) Swim, Angela Jent (Steve Perry) and Stephen (Glenna) Jent, all of Morehead, Kentucky. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Kristal Dawne Swim, Alexandria D. Carol Jent, Morgan Paige Jent and Sean Lunsford; two brothers, John (Dean) Black, Jr. and James C. (Sue) Black of Georgetown, Kentucky, dear family members Stephanie Perry, Grant Perry and Lani Perry, along with many beloved family members and loyal friends he considered part of his family. Verlan was born on October 4, 1929, in Morehead, Kentucky, the second child of John and Ollie Caudill Black. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Hazel (Ben) Lowe. Verlan was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. During the war, he served as a Corporal in a special computer and technology unit stationed in Okinawa, Japan. The discipline and love of country never left him. Verlan was well known throughout the area for his carpentry skills and, along with his brother-in-law Winston McClurg, created a successful carpentry and building business that created some of today's best carpenters of the region. He was famous for his attention to detail and took pride in his work. Verlan retired in 1999 to pursue traveling and fun with his wife and family. Verlan was a member of Johnson First Church of God, a Kentucky Colonel and an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat fan. Funeral services will be held at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2013, with the Reverend Winston McClurg and Reverend Johnny Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Brown Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be Tom McClurg, Greg Lowe, Jack Whidden, Anthony Black, Michael Black and Denton Blair. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Visitation: Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Funeral: Sunday, May 26, 2013, at 4 p.m. Interment: Brown Cemetery
