Obituary

Toney Cloy Phillips, 98, of Morehead, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 22, 2007. He was born October 22, 1909, in Limestone County, Alabama, to the late Loy and Lula Davis Phillips. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ophelia and Velma, and one brother, Robert. Toney began his teaching career at Martin College in Pulaski, Tennessee, before becoming a professor of chemistry at Morehead State University from 1951 to 1980, a job he dearly loved. For many years, he taught the Men-s Bible Class at the Morehead United Methodist Church. His principal interests were his family and his work, but he also greatly enjoyed his hobbies of bird watching, beekeeping, and weather forecasting. Toney is survived by his wife, Mary Haggan Phillips; his son, Nelson Phillips; his daughter, Cynthia (Brian) Haggard; and his pet Border Collie, Lucky. Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. J. D. Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Morehead State University Foundation Scholarship Fund, Palmer Development House, Morehead, KY 40351 or the Morehead United Methodist Church, 227 W. Main, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Wednesday, October 24, 2007, after 2 p.m. Funeral: Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at 4 p.m. Interment: Lee Cemetery
