Obituary

Thomas Ralph Burns, age 92, of Crestview Hill, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the Life Care Center in Morehead. Born March 20, 1919, in Phoenix, Arizona, Tom was the son of the late D. C. and Carrie Cartee Burns. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Elbert, Bill, Frank, and Paul Burns. A daughter, Susan Jan Burns Fitch, passed away November 6, 1986. Survivors include his wife, Ada Colley Burns, whom he married October 27, 1941; one daughter, Beverly Richey and husband Bob of Merritt Island, Florida; four grandchildren, Dan James, Tom James, Katie Fitch, and David Fitch; five great grandchildren, Nicholas James, Nick Fleming, Haley James, Ava Fitch, and Kevin James. Other survivors include two brothers, John Burns and Donald Burns, both of Merritt Island, Florida, two sisters, Opal Calhoun of Grayson, Kentucky, Shirley Baldridge of Clearfield, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Burns graduated from Catlettsburg High School and the U.K. College of Law. He was a practicing attorney in Morehead for 40 years, a Morehead City Attorney for 10 years, master commissioner of the Rowan Circuit Court for 20 years; and a former Morehead Police Judge. Mr. Burns, one of the founders of First Federal Savings & Loan, served on the Board of Directors since it was organized. He was legal counsel for a number of years and served as President for 18 years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served as a First Sergeant, and a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held 9 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be First Federal Savings & Loan Board of Directors, Truman Dehner, Dr. Ralph Derrickson, Dr. J. E. Duncan, Verlin Qualls, Jonathan Stiles, and John Northcutt. Visitation is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Sunday, November 27, 2011, 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral: Monday, November 28, 2011, at 9 a.m. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
