Obituary

Dr. Terry Lynn -Doc- Irons, 54, of Morehead, KY, formerly of Waynesville, OH, Morehead State University Professor of English, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father Richard Irons and niece Rebecca Anne Irons. He is survived by his mother Barbara Irons of Waynesville, OH, and brother Charles Irons and sister-in-law Melissa Irons of Dayton, OH. Terry was valedictorian and National Merit Scholar at Waynesville High School, earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in English and English Literature from the University of Dayton, and a Ph.D. in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Terry was a long-time professor at Morehead State University and was deeply engaged with both the school and the local community. During his tenure at MSU, he served as both chair of the Faculty Senate and as Faculty Regent and was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Service Award. For sixteen years, Terry acted as the advisor for the Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, mentoring hundreds of undergraduate students. This summer, he received the Distinguished Service Chapter Award, which is the highest individual honor that can be bestowed upon an alumnus of the fraternity. Terry was a board member of both the Morehead Theatre Guild and Habitat for Humanity and heavily involved with the Kentucky Teacher Intern Program, the Coalition of Senate and Faculty Leadership, Southeastern Conference on Linguistics, Rowan County Relay for Life, and MSU Student Relay for Life. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the MSU Concert Choir. An active Mason, Terry was a member of Morehead Lodge No. 654, F. & A. M. and was currently serving as Junior Warden. He also held membership in the York Rite of Freemasonry, holding offices in Morehead Chapter No. 168, Royal Arch Masons (King); Morehead Council No. 45, Royal and Select Masters (Deputy Master), and Morehead Commandery No. 53, Knights Templar (Generalissimo). His other Masonic affiliations included Highland York Rite College No. 134, where he held the office of Preceptor. Terry was also a member of Kentucke Council No. 71, Knight Masons and Morehead Council No. 484, Allied Masonic Degrees, which he served as Secretary-Treasurer. A 32nd degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Covington, Terry was also serving as Chaplain of the Scots Guard and was a member of the Morehead Area Scottish Rite Club. He was a Past President of the 654 Masonic Corporation and Associate Patron of Morehead Chapter No. 227, Order of the Eastern Star. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351. Commandery Services, Order of Eastern Star Services and Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Button Auditorium on the Morehead State University campus. A private service will be held at St. Alban-s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Lisa Tolliver officiating. Interment will be in Miami Cemetery, Waynesville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MSU Foundation, Inc., Palmer Development House, Morehead, KY 40351, St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351, or the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the entire Morehead community, including MSU colleagues, Delta Tau Delta brothers, St. Claire Hospice, and Terry-s many friends, for the many kindnesses shown during his prolonged illness.
