Obituary

Steve Lewis, age 65, of Morehead, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Steve was born August 25, 1950, in Ashland, Kentucky, to C. Roger and Betty Logan Lewis. He attended University Breckenridge School in Morehead through high school and graduated from Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, in 1972 with a degree in business. While at Anderson, he was the center for the AU Ravens basketball team. After college he married Janet Garrett Lewis and began working with his father in the family business, C. Roger Lewis Agency, acquiring his broker's, real estate, insurance and auction licenses. Steve quickly became very involved in the local Morehead community, serving on the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, Hope Hill Children's Home Board and Morehead University Foundation Board and other various non-profit committees. At the time of his passing, Steve was a member of the Whitaker Bank Board of Directors, St. Claire Regional Foundation and St. Claire Medical Center Board of Directors and the Anderson University Board of Trustees. In 2009, Steve followed in the footsteps of his father by being inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame. He had a great passion for auctioneering and served as president in the Kentucky State Association where he holds the record for longest-serving member. Steve was also Director of the National Board of Auctioneers for three years and treasurer for eight. He was president of the National Auction License Officials Association twice and chairman of the National Association convention in 1992. During his auction career, he, his brother Mark and father C. Roger conducted over 1,000 auctions together. Steve spoke in 24 states and traveled frequently to conduct charity auctions, his favorite being the Peyton Manning Children's Foundation in Indianapolis, Indiana. Despite Steve's professional commitments, he found time to serve the Lord in many capacities and spend time doing what he loved most, being with family and in the great outdoors. He and his wife, Jan, took several missions trips to locations like Kenya, Ecuador and Venezuela. He taught Sunday School at Morehead First Church of God and was on various church councils. You could often find Steve cycling, hiking, kayaking or RV-ing. He raised over $20,000 for JDRF by participating in four 100-mile bike rides over the past six years. Steve and Jan made Maui, Hawaii, their second home and visited frequently, while also enjoying trips to Asia and Europe where they visited foreign exchange students they had hosted and consider part of their family. Above all, Steve loved his family. He was a dedicated father to Sarah and Rebecca and a father figure to many others whom he mentored, advocated on behalf of, and loved. He never missed an opportunity to attend his grandchildren's sporting events and loved to play ball with them every change he got. Steve is survived by his wife, Janet Garrett Lewis; mother, Betty Lewis of Morehead; two daughters, Sarah Noel and husband Ryan of Indianapolis, Indiana, Rebecca Lewis of Morehead; granddaughters Elizabeth Lewis and Juliet Noel, grandsons Taylan Sorrell, Simeon Noel and Alex Wallace; brother, Mark Lewis and wife Kay of Morehead, three nephews and two nieces.
