Obituary

Stephen Winston Barker, 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Morehead, Kentucky, surrounded by his family.

Steve, as he was known to all, was born March 30, 1951, in Louisville, KY, to the late Ollie and Wanda Barker of Morehead. A graduate of both Rowan County High School and Morehead State University, Steve married his love, Carol Jean Fairchild, on October 13, 1978, across the covered bridge at the Goddard Church, a picturesque setting that still always catches the family's eye whenever driving past. The couple went on to raise three children, Denise Jane, Paul Wayne, and Patrick Ford.

Steve was a consistent presence in the Morehead community for nearly his entire life, working at WMOR radio and in real estate until he found his calling as a State Farm Insurance agent, a position he held for almost 42 years until his passing. His smiling face could often be spotted on billboards around town and customers in the region were reassured that someone with his level of compassion and experience would be there to support them in difficult moments.

While he was proud of his State Farm staff and the work he was doing, Steve had many interests outside of business hours. One particular interest was his love for music. His musical taste spanned across all decades and genres. To his family's amusement, he rarely, if ever, knew any actual lyrics to any song, but you would often find him bopping his head with his mouth moving as though he did. However, when music was played that featured a banjo or mandolin, it seemed to speak to his heart. Steve listened a little closer to these songs while the music of the mountains moved him in a way that others tunes could not. Because of this, he was an ardent supporter the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music and spent many evenings entertained by its students at their concerts at MSU.

Though his roots were in Kentucky, Steve had a genuine curiosity about the world around him. Over the years, he explored with wonder from the peaks of Tajikistan, to the beaches of Spain; from the Great Wall of China to viewing orangutans in their natural Indonesian habitats. While he happily traveled the world, he always looked forward to coming home and spending time with his family at their rural Rowan County cabin retreat.

There was, however, one place that kept calling Steve back. A place that became a second home to him, and that was Ireland. Born from his work with the Morehead Sister Cities student exchange program, Steve and his family gained lifelong friends in Ballymena, Northern Ireland and they visited with them every chance they could. Nearly two decades later, many of these students still refer to him as their "American Dad".

Steve was the personification of "never met a stranger" and could often be found chatting up anyone in his vicinity. More than once these casual conversations led to continued friendships and correspondence throughout his life. Naturally, but subtly, funny, sometimes only those listening closely would catch his zippy one-liners. But if you were lucky enough to be within earshot, he'd likely have you rolling with laughter.

Though he is no longer physically with us, his family will take many lessons from his life here on earth. His integrity, generosity, curiosity, sense of humor, and kindness are traits that will forever resonate with the family and something they will continue to spread to everyone they meet.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Barker; three children, Denise Wamsley (Scott) of Ashland, KY; Paul King (Carla) of Flemingsburg, KY; and Patrick Barker (Johanna) of Austin, Texas; one sister, Susan DiSanza (Tony) of Senoia, GA; eight grandchildren: Scotty, Marvin, Jen, Kyle, Taylor, Dylan, Ella, Patrick, Ava, Augustine, and Josephine; and three great-grandchildren.
