Sonja K. Burns, 85, of Merritt Island, Florida, widow of Donald E. Burns, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Health First Hospice in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Born September 24, 1931, in Wiesbaden, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elsa Katharina Seipp Koch. Sonja was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Donald E. Burns, on April 6, 2012. Mrs. Burns is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Michael Studer of Lacey's Spring, Alabama; brother, Wolfgang Leinweber of Wiesbaden, Germany; stepson, Michael Weil and wife Claudia of Wiesbaden, Germany; grandchildren, Hope Marie Dunlap and and Karrie Crews; great grandchildren, Austin Blake Crews, Constance Lynn Studer, and Brandon James Dunlap; sister-in-law, Shirley Baldridge of Clearfield; nieces and nephews, including Dana (Doug) Martin and Beverly Richey; extended family and dear friends. Don and Sonja-wed in Germany on February 16, 1956-were immersed in the military lifestyle during Don's 30-year career while serving in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army. Later when Don joined Pan Am World Services and then founded his business, Burns Consulting Company, their joint commitment to the purpose was always evident. Sonja was involved in community service with various organizations and, in addition, developed many long-lasting, caring friendships along the way. She also enjoyed traveling, bowling, and gardening. This year her patio boasts pots filled with tomatoes, various herbs, and gorgeous flowers. If one is quiet, melodies from 16 wind chimes will be heard in the background. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill C. Konstantopoulos officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Sonja K.
