Shelby Lawson, Jr., 54, of Versailles, formerly of Farmers, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016, at the Bluegrass Community Hospital in Versailles. Born August 31, 1961, in Mt. Sterling, he is the son of Shelby Lawson, Sr., and Tish Burnett Lawson of Farmers. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his wife, Cindy Hammond Lawson; three sons, Joshua Shelby (Emily) Lawson of Owenton, Samuel Boyd (Emma) Lawson of Morehead, and Joel Benjamin Lawson of Missoula, Montana, and their mother, Diane Boyd Lawson of Farmers; three grandchildren, William Lawson, Anna Lawson, and Abigail Hanshaw; one sister, Cindy (Sam) Cross of Morehead; and two nephews, Jacob Ginter and Caleb Cross. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Cecille Lawson. Shelby graduated from Rowan County High School in 1979 and received a bachelor's degree in police administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He graduated from the Kentucky State Police Academy in 1983, Cadet Class 61. He served with distinction for 24 years with the Kentucky State Police, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2007. He was the Deputy Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security from 2007 until 2013 and was currently the Commander of the Kentucky State Police Intelligence Branch, a position he held since 2013. Shelby enjoyed long-distance motorcycle riding, outdoor activities, and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of Farmers Christian Church. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2016, at the Morehead First Church of God with Brother Billy Noble officiating. Burial will follow at Carey Cemetery in Farmers. Pallbearers: Kenny Skeans, Bobby Motley, Lon Fields, A. K. Taylor, Steve Zoller, Jack Morgan, Kris Kirk , and Tripp Watts Visitation is from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY and from noon until 2 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2016, at Morehead First Church of God, 576 Sunset Drive, Morehead, KY 40351. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Farmers Christian Church, 100 KY Hwy 801 South, Morehead, KY 40351 Visitation: Sunday, February 21, 5-9 p.m, Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals; Monday, February 22, 2016, noon-2 p.m., Morehead First Church of God Funeral: Monday, February 22, 2016, 2 p.m., Morehead First Church of God Interment: Carey Cemetery, Farmers
