Obituary

Samuel Karras Williams, 41, a native of Morehead, Kentucky, was born November 27, 1974, and passed away Monday, December 21, 2015, at his home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Sam is survived by his beloved daughters, Brooklynn Grace Williams and Clara Elizabeth Williams, both of Morehead; his parents, Dion C. Williams and Dr. Kimberly Williams of Morehead and Deborah Yoder Miranda and Leandro Esteban Miranda of Starkville, Mississippi; and his sisters, Farrah Williams Ingram and husband Scott of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and Morgan Grace Miranda of Jackson, Mississippi. Sam graduated from Rowan County High School in 1993. He received a B. S. degree in Biology and a B. S. degree in Geology at Morehead State University. While at MSU Sam found he loved to teach and was a sought-after tutor to many struggling students. He went on to earn a M. S. in Geology from the University of Calgary, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Sam was a gifted Geologist, even described as 'brilliant' in his field by learned colleagues. His area of expertise was core sample analysis, determining where precious reserves could be found underground. His proficiency in knowing just where to dig or drill made him a valued Senior Geologist in the oil and gas industry. His academic research in the field was respected and highly praised by his peers. Sam was most happy outdoors. The extraordinarily beautiful summers of western Canada found Sam camping, hiking, and fishing the Oldman River at the base of the Canadian Rockies, his pic-ax always with him to collect rocks and fossils. The breathtaking photographs he posted were a testimony to why he so loved that part of the world. While hiking there he also became an avid bird-watcher; he liked horned owls. Sam was always up for a road trip, especially one far north into the Yukon with his MSU Professor and mentor, Dr. Charles Mason. Sam was ever smiling, charming and mischievous, so very likeable! He was a wicked smart, complex and analytical personality - fully the impassioned academic workaholic while also the laid-back bandana wearing rocker who adored The Grateful Dead. Talented artist, real foodie and not a bad cook, Sam was also an avid reader who opened up the world for 'his girls.' Everything with Sam was fun; he made even simple things - like grocery shopping! - an adventure. His optimism was bottomless ('the world is yours for the taking!') and his determined stubbornness was epic, just ask those who loved him. His open-minded, non-judgmental, always willing-to-help approach to folks won him many acquaintances (137 people wished him HAPPY BIRTHDAY on his Facebook page in November) and a close circle of real true-blue friends. If you were his friend, lucky you. Sam saw the world through his own original kaleidoscope. We will most miss how he pulled each of us into his ever colorful tie-dyed world. 'Shake it up now, sugaree. I'll meet you at the jubilee…!' Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jesse Perry officiating.
