Sammy Douglas Gullett, age 61, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016, at his home after an extended illness. He was born January 26, 1955, at Pleasant Valley in Olive Hill, son of the late Wheeler H. and Sally Sparkman Gullett. Sammy is survived by his wife, Lora McKenzie Gullett, whom he married August 10, 1990, and their daughter, Lara Gullett, of Morehead. Sammy graduated from Rowan County High School in 1973 and received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Morehead State University. He was a retired teacher from Morgan County Board of Education where he taught driver's education, physical education and in-school instruction. Previous teaching positions included Licking Valley Drivers Education Program in Hazard, KY and Frenchburg Job Corps. In between teaching positions, Sammy assisted in running the 32 Drive- Inn located in Morehead, KY, a family owned business, as well as managing rental properties and farming. In his younger years, Sammy enjoyed playing basketball, softball and baseball. He assisted in coaching football and basketball in both Rowan and Morgan counties. Sammy became an avid UK basketball and football fan, like most of us in Eastern KY listening to Cawood Ledford on the radio with Sally and Wheeler. He also was an avid New York Giants' fan during his fellow fraternity brother, Phil Simms, playing days. An accomplished drummer, he played in his high school and college marching bands, and also played in several local bands in high school, college and later enjoyed assisting with the Morgan County High School Band. Along with fellow teachers, he loved playing drums and entertaining students at Morgan County High School during pep rallies and assemblies. Sammy developed his love for Rock and Roll and all music by assisting his father, Wheeler, in the family entertainment business which included pinball and juke boxes in local businesses in Rowan and surrounding counties. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jeff Fannin and Pastor Joe McKenzie officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Honorary pallbearers will be Timmy Buckler, Jerry Strunk, Ted Trent, Jerry Calvert, Brady Guyer, Chris Caldwell, and the Brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Fleming County Cancer Care, P. O.
