Obituary

Elder Roscoe Eldridge, of Oney Hollow, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away December 26, 2015, at the VA Hospital in Lexington at the age of 90. Roscoe was born on January 4, 1925, the eldest of ten children born to the late Preston and Lillie Pence Eldridge. Preceding him in death were his parents; six sisters: Anna Fraley, Frieda Crumb, Verna Riddle, Lula Kiser, Clara Goodman, and Mary Brown; one brother, Charles 'Pete' Eldridge, and Roscoe's loving wife of 64 years, Verna Mae Hyrne Eldridge, who passed away October 21, 2007. When Verna was eight months pregnant, Roscoe was drafted and entered the military in October 1943. He went to Europe and was a participant in the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) in June 1944. Roscoe was on the front lines in five major battles until May 1945. He earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/5 Bronze Stars; Purple Heart; Bronze Star w/1 Silver Star; and Bronze Arrowhead. In 1971, Roscoe was ordained as a minister in Iron Hill Association of the United Baptist Church. He soon became the Moderator of Hayes Branch United Baptist Church and felt the job was 'his gift'. He enjoyed it very much and felt it was easy with the Lord's help. Roscoe held that position for 17 years. Later, Roscoe joined the South Fork Church, Old Regular Baptist, Philadelphia Association in 2004. He was baptized by Elders Willis Tolliver and Ira Adkins, Jr. He was re-ordained a minister in the Old Regular Baptist in October 2007. Roscoe never finished the 8th Grade but he was a 'self-taught' educated man through his life experiences and the many manual jobs he held in Ohio and Kentucky. After the war, he worked for Wald Mfg. making bicycles for 50 cents an hour and a short time for the C & O Railroad. Roscoe was a farmer for most of his life, first as a tenant farmer, and later as a land owner. He worked seven years at the January & Wood Cotton Mill while running a small dairy farm. He also worked a variety of second jobs to make a better life for his family. Jobs such as a school bus driver, running a slaughter house, cutting charcoal wood, hauling coal, surveying for Soil Conservation, working as a lineman on the M&NF Railroad, and working on the road crew for Rowan County. He finally retired from Morehead State University as a warehouseman after 12 years. Roscoe is survived by his daughter, Betty Ann, and his son-in-law, Casten Pugh, of Morehead; two grandchildren: Theodore Sedrick Eldridge, Manassas, Virginia, and Nancy Eldridge Nickell and her husband Scott of Morehead, Kentucky; and three great-grandchildren: James Eldridge, Kissimmee, Florida, and Kara Dawn Nickell and Taryn Leigh Nickell, both of Morehead, Kentucky. He is also survived by two siblings: Carma Jean Eldridge of Morehead and Shirley Blevins and her husband Earl of Glasgow, Kentucky. He is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephew as well as a host of friends and acquaintances. He will be sadly missed by his many Brothers and Sisters in the Church. The Church was Roscoe's life, he was the 'rock' of his family, and he will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Elder Gary Adkins and Elder Gary Blevins officiating.
