Roger Douglas 'Doug' Haney, age 64, of Morehead, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015, after an extended illness. Born August 10, 1950, in Morehead, he was the son of Jean Flannery of Lexington and James William 'Bill' Haney, who passed away in 2006. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Plank, in 1990. In addition to his mother, Doug is survived by one son, Eric (Yolanda) Bucher of West Palm Beach, Florida; one grandson, Alexander Bucher of West Palm Beach, Florida; two brothers, David (Paulette) Haney of Morehead and Donald (Theda) Haney of Richmond; two sisters, Rosemary (Mike) Curtis and Jelana (Jack) Lewis, all of Morehead; and several nieces and nephews. Doug graduated from Morehead State University in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and computer science. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, in May 1972, as a 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1975. He was appointed to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1977 and was promoted to Captain in 1980. Doug left the military in 1987 after 14 years of service. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Army Service Ribbon. For a number of years, Doug worked as a special projects coordinator for Ken-Mor Stone. Always involved in community activities, Doug had been a member of Morehead Masonic Lodge, No. 654, El Hasa Shrine Temple, Morehead-Rowan County Jaycees, where he served in numerous local and state leadership roles, and Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Doug was a Kentucky Colonel and had a passion for serving the Democratic Party in various capacities. A former drag racer, he enjoyed the racing community, especially NASCAR. Doug attended the Solid Rock Apostolic Church in Farmers. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr., officiating and assisted by nephew Austin Lewis. Burial will follow in Mabry Cemetery at Cranston with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post 126. Pallbearers will be nephews, Chad Planck, Garrett Curtis, Jordan Haney, Britton Lewis, Brandon Lewis, and brothers-in-law, Mike Curtis and Jack Lewis. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
