Robert Anthony 'Tony' Clayton, age 51, of Camargo Road, Mt. Sterling, was born September 25, 1961, in Mt. Sterling, and passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington after a courageous battle with leukemia. Tony is survived by his wife, Theresa Hodges Clayton, whom he married November 23, 1990; two sons, Patrick Clayton and wife Sarah of Shelbyville, Dillon Clayton and Kelsey Spencer of Mt. Sterling; one daughter, Toni Clayton of Mt. Sterling; two grandchildren, Addison Thompson and Spencer Clayton; his mother, Elfredra Swartz Clayton of Mt. Sterling; and four brothers, Arthur Clayton and Mike Clayton, both of Mt. Sterling, Alan Clayton of Interlachen, Florida, and Steve Clayton of Holly Ridge, North Carolina. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews; extended family members; and two friends he considered family, Sean Richardson and Will Young. His maternal grandmother, Clara Eades Mastin preceded him in death. Tony was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, dedicated church member, community leader, and fire service professional. A lifelong resident of Mt. Sterling, Tony graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1979. Always concerned about improving the community, Tony volunteered with many organizations, including the high school football team and United Way, serving in many different capacities, including Chairman. He was a board member and secretary/treasurer for the Montgomery County 911 Center. Tony also served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1980-83. Currently serving as Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal for Montgomery County Fire/EMS, Tony is known statewide for his numerous contributions to fire service. He began his career with the department in 1977 as a volunteer firefighter and became a paid member in 1982. He also spent two years as a firefighter/EMT with the Winchester Fire Department. Tony progressed through the ranks of the fire service and enthusiastically shared his knowledge with colleagues. Tony was an Instructor with State Fire Rescue Training Area 9 since 1991. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Tony sang in the choir, drove the church bus, helped with Vacation Bible School, and served on several committees and in various capacities. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the First Baptist Church with Brother Rick Johnson and Brother Tony Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Machpelah Cemetery with military honors by Montgomery County American Legion Post No. 22. George, Jonathan Beam, and Micah Williams Honorary Pallbearers: Montgomery County Fire/EMS members, statewide Fire and Rescue personnel, Montgomery County Football Team, Mt. Sterling Police Department Visitation is 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, 925 Woodford Drive, Mt. Sterling, KY 40353 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or American Cancer Society.
