Obituary

Robert Barris Gould, 79, of Morehead, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016, at his home. He was born on January 27, 1937, in Memphis Tennessee, to the late Sam and Clara Zimmerman Gould. Dr. Gould is survived by his wife, Wanda Mary Clark Gould; two sons, James Robert Gould of Lexington and John Barris Gould and his wife Jennifer and their two-month-old daughter, Alinea, of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother Samuel David Gould of Louisville; brother-in-law John Clark, sister-in-law Eva Clark, and nephew, Matthew Clark, all of Maryville, Tennessee. Dr. Gould earned a B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and an M.A. degree from Memphis State University. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves. His professional career spanning 38 years, beginning as a high school teacher and then professor, included two places: Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Morehead State University, where he served on the faculty for 34 years. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Fraternity and various professional organizations in which he presented papers. One of Dr. Gould's favorite courses was Geography for Teachers, in which he attempted to prepare the students to teach in their own classrooms with emphasis on how to apply and teach the subject as well as learning factual information. After retirement, he immersed himself in numerous community and church activities. He served as a volunteer at the Morehead State University Adult Learning Center for nearly four years. He was at one time president of the Morehead Men's Club. In more recent years, he was involved with the establishment of Community Gardens, an outgrowth of a project at the Morehead United Methodist Church, where he attended regularly and was a member for over a half century. Dr. Gould served in the church choir. Bob loved his family, his friends and his community. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Mansfield officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126. Pallbearers: John A. Clark, Matthew Clark, Dr. David Saxon, Dr. Ted Pass, Dr. Johnnie Fryman, and Dr. Wade Cain. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. William Clark, James Robinson, Dr. Roland Burns, Dr. J. E. Duncan, Dr. Howard Setser, Dave Braughler, Robert Stanley, Larry Beeman, Dr. Robert Meadows, Dr. John Philley, Bryon May, and Cliff Barker. Visitation is 2 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
