Robert Gene Burchett, Sr., age 85, of Dolly Avenue, Olive Hill, passed away Friday, June 5, 2015, at his home. Born February 15, 1930, in Carter County, he was a son of the late Roland Tucker and Bessie Crawford Burchett. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and one brother, Evangela, Fern, Evelyn, Eloise, Edna, Althea, June, and Jim. Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilda Jean Hudson Burchett, in 1994, and is survived by their children, Dewayne (Hettie) Barnett of Clearfield, Jeffrey Barnett (widower of Kennitha Gail) of Olive Hill, Robert (Adela) Burchett of El Paso, TX, Linda (Harry) Campbell of Clearfield, and Jim Burchett of Morehead; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bob is also survived by his wife of 18 years, Glenna Woods Burchett , and extended family, Bronston Lee Bradley of Olive Hill, Donny (Angie) Bradley of Statesville, NC, Colette (Matthew) Jenkins of Greenup and the late Jeffrey Bradley; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; two special grandchildren in his life, Richard and Little Matt, whom he cared about dearly. Bob was an American patriot, community leader, and loyal family member and friend. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he proudly served his country from June 8, 1948, to June 2, 1952. Bob served aboard the USS Higbee DDR-806 (the first US warship named for a female member of the U.S. Navy) and was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon 3 Stars, United Nations Medal, China Service Medal, and Navy Occupation Service Medal. A surveyor during his working years, he was employed by Holloway and Son and later retired from J. D. Williams in Mt. Sterling after more than 15 years. Bob was a staunch Republican and served in many leadership positions including Treasurer of the Rowan County Republican Party. He had been a member of the Odd Fellows, the American Legion in Morehead and later in Olive Hill, and was of the Baptist Faith. He and Glenna spent many hours watching WLJC, the Christian television station. Bob was an avid U.K. basketball fan and enjoyed camping and fishing. Known as a 'people person,' Bob never met a stranger and enjoyed engaging conversations with family and friends. His presence will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve May officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Hill Memorial Park with full military honors by Moore-Armstrong American Legion Post 138. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Visitation is 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to WLJC, P. O. Box Y, Beattyville, KY 41311.
