Patricia "Patty" Crutcher Skaggs, age 91, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Lexington, Kentucky.
Born December 18, 1934, in Morehead, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William "Snooks" Crutcher and Darlyn Miller Crutcher. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Clayton Z. Skaggs.
Patty is survived by her daughter, Sue Johnson (Mike) of Lexington, Kentucky; her son, Clayton Z. Skaggs, Jr. (Becky) of Austin, Texas; and her sister, Marilynn "Mike" Johnson of Lexington, Kentucky.
Also left to cherish her memory are her three grandsons, Nicholas Johnson (Emily), Shawn Johnson (Roxana), and Clayton Z. Skaggs III (Katy); four great-grandchildren, Sofia Johnson, Skyla Johnson, Carrick Skaggs, and Clayton Z. Skaggs IV; two special nieces, Linda Dewan and Allison McDowell; one nephew, Stephen Garber and many cherished great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A graduate of Morehead State College with a degree in art, Patty devoted much of her life to artistic expression. She taught art and continued painting throughout her life, particularly in watercolor. Her artwork was featured in Lexington Gallery Hop exhibitions and was admired by many. Professionally, she served for many years as Advertising Manager for McAlpin's Department Stores in Lexington before establishing her own advertising agency, where she combined her artistic talent with her entrepreneurial spirit.
Together, Patty and Clayton shared a passion for thoroughbred horses. At their PayClay Farm, they bred, raised, trained, and raced thoroughbreds at Keeneland and other racetracks throughout Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.
At age 81, Patty returned to her hometown of Morehead and settled in the lake house she loved so dearly. There, she enjoyed the beauty of the lake, the companionship of friends and neighbors, and continued her watercolor painting. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Lake Lewman community, whose friendship, kindness, and support helped Patty maintain her independence until she moved to her daughter's home in Lexington at the age of 89.
Patty will be remembered for her creativity, determination, entrepreneurial spirit, love of family, and lifelong appreciation for art, horses, and the natural beauty of her cherished Rowan County home.
The family is especially grateful to the caregivers at Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice for the kindness, compassion, and dignity they provided during Patty's final months. Their care brought comfort not only to Patty but also to her family during a difficult time.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Inc., with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Lee Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice, 1733 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, KY 40504, or online at bgcarenav.org, in appreciation for the compassionate care and support provided to Patty and her family during her final days.
