Ottist White Elam, age 87, of Bluestone Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2007, at her residence. She was born April 10, 1920, at Vale in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Ida Belle Parrish White. Also preceding her in death were a brother, Delmar White, and a four-year-old sister, Bethel White. Her husband, Thomas Edward (Edd) Elam, whom she wed February 7, 1942, passed away April 3, 1995. She is survived by one son, Ray Elam and wife Margie, and one daughter, Kay Black, all of Morehead, Kentucky; one nephew, James Delmar White and wife Wanda of Grayson, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Joe Elam, Rick Elam, Nick Elam, Eddie Black, and Elaine Williamson; and seven great-grandchildren, Loryn Black, Chelsea Williamson, Tyler Elam, Loni Elam, Ryan Black, April Williamson, Rachel Elam, Ashley Elam, and Joey Elam. Ottist was a well-known and respected Rowan County public servant. The first female elected in Rowan County, she served as Circuit Clerk for two years and County Clerk for 30 years and 8 months before her retirement in 1978. A lifetime member of the Kentucky County Clerks Association, she was the secretary-treasurer of this organization for thirteen years. She served on the Selective Service Board during World War II, was Chairman of the Rowan County Democratic Party, was a Kentucky Colonel, and was selected the 1986 Woman of the Year by the Morehead-Rowan County Business and Professional Women-s Club. She had been an active member of the Morehead First Free Will Baptist Church since 1976. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with the Rev. David Starcher and Tyler Elam officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eddie Black, Joe Elam, Rick Elam, Nick Elam, Bruce Elam, J. T. Owens, and James White. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2007, and anytime Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes are suggested to the Morehead First Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 1003, Morehead, KY 40351 Visitation: Monday, November 5, 2007, after 6 p.m. Funeral: Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at 2 p.m. Interment: Brown Cemetery
